BENT MOUSTACHE (The) – Pastures New Seasons Turn
Aussi étrange que cela puisse paraître, aucun des membres de The Bent Moustache n’arbore actuellement de pilosité faciale en rapport avec le nom loufoque de leur groupe (surtout qu’il y a deux nanas à bord…). Il s’agit d’un projet en provenance des Pays-Bas, né sur les cendres de Donkey, la précédente formation du leader Ajay Saggar. Ce dernier est, à ce jour, le seul membre d’origine et clairement la tête pensante du quatuor. C’est en effet lui qui a écrit, enregistré, produit et mixé “Pastures New Seasons Turn”, un deuxième album qui fait suite à “Forst” (2007). Entre-temps, une pléthore de singles en édition limitée a fait le plaisir de leurs fans qui se les arrachaient en moins de temps qu’il n’en faut pour l’écrire.
Malgré une intro en larsens, “Skip A Breath”, la plage d’ouverture de la plaque nous emmène vers des contrées nerveuses, mais accessibles. En effet, derrière des guitares bien présentes, on remarque une réelle volonté d’adoucir la donne, à l’instar du très radiophonique “All In Our Hands” ou de la plage titulaire, même si, dans ce cas précis, des pointes expérimentales viennent ça et là perturber l’auditeur non averti. L’ombre de Sonic Youth ne se trouve jamais très loin (“Hey Mate (I’ve Got Plenty To Spare)”, “Seine Meine Geheime Code”) mais se contenter de simplement comparer Ajay Saggar à Thurston Moore serait beaucoup trop simpliste.
En effet, si l’on excepte les bizarroïdes “Heavy Jam” (qui porte admirablement bien son titre) et “Azad Hind” (on dirait une déclamation en langue germanique), des influences bien plus vastes parsèment un disque qui plonge dans l’indie britannique (“Loose Thinking Now” fait très Charlatans malgré les cuivres en toile de fond) ou dans la froideur du post-punk (“The Sound Of Sirens”), tout en parvenant à conserver un cachet singulier. Même si “Pastures New Seasons Turn” risque d’en rebuter certains, les plus curieux d’entre eux finiront par l’adopter au vu du nombre de recoins à explorer, malgré un titre difficile à retenir et une pochette pas nécessairement accueillante…
